The People Who Show Up

Hey! This is going to be a quick update about my month.

We got to celebrate my mom by going to brunch at Pinstripes for Mother's Day. She deserved that and so much more. She is my coworker, coach, confidant, and so much more. I love her more than words can describe. A couple of weeks later, she took me shopping at HomeGoods and spoiled me with some pink bedding for my birthday next month. It wasn't just the bedding that meant so much—it was the reminder that she knows exactly what little things make me happy.

Life has been hard. We're still really struggling with caregivers. The search for the right people continues, and some days it feels never-ending. It's been so ongoing that I cannot quite wrap my head around it. At the same time, I have been reminded how fortunate I am to have the caregivers I do. Several of them stepped up in a big way over Memorial Day weekend, and I honestly don't know what I would have done without them. This month was long and disappointing in many ways, but the people in my life kept showing up.

I did get a really cool opportunity to be involved in some medical classes over the summer. I will be acting as a patient with a disability while medical students work through simulated patient encounters. At the end of each simulation, I will have the opportunity to give feedback to the students. This work is a passion of mine, so it feels like a meaningful step forward in my career. More than anything, I hope these future doctors leave with a greater understanding of disability and the importance of being patient with people who use communication devices. A little patience can make all the difference.

This is the start of my birthday month, and after the kind of month I've had, I am excited to have something to look forward to. More than anything, I am looking forward to seeing the people I love.

As I reflect on this month, I keep coming back to one thing: gratitude. Gratitude for my family. Gratitude for my caregivers. Gratitude for new opportunities. And gratitude for all of you.

The fact that you take the time to read these posts every month brings me to tears—in a good way. I never take it for granted. Thank you for continuing to show up and be part of this journey.

Until next time,

Hannah!
